Cycling Programmes

Bikeability is a national government-funded programme from the Department of Transport supported by the Bikeability Trust and Lancashire County Council.

Modern Cycling Proficiency

Bikeability

At Chorley SSP, we are a proud provider of Bikeability training not only in Chorley but across Lancashire. We are committed to create an engaging and secure environment where children can explore and enhance their cycling abilities. With our team of experienced instructors and a well-rounded curriculum, we ensure that the joy of cycling is accessible to children of all ages and skill levels. Our delivery is designed to foster confidence and independence, enriching their cycling experience.

Our Bike Curriculum

Balance Bikes. Ideal for children aged 4-6, helping them to learn balance and key skills for a two-wheel bike. These are pedal-less bikes, moved by kids pushing with their legs. We have a fleet of bikes and helmets for our balance programme for young learners in reception classes. The programme culminates in our exciting Balance Bike Festival in February. This event adds a dash of friendly competition, making it a firm favourite among staff and a thrilling experience for the children!

Learn to Ride. This programme, fully funded for schools, is specifically designed for children who are yet to master the art of riding a two-wheel bike. Our instructors dedicate their time to small groups, with a maximum of three children per group. The focus is on teaching the children how to balance, control, and navigate their bikes effectively. It’s a hands-on, personalised approach to learning to ride a bike.

Level One. This level is perfect for children who are a year away from their Level Two on-road training. It’s designed to prepare them for road cycling and focuses on enhancing essential skills such as checking, signalling, and executing emergency stops. It’s a comprehensive introduction to road safety and cycling proficiency.

Level One and Two. Fully funded for schools and we ensure that all children receive their Level Two Bikeability training before they start high school in years 5 or 6. This training, conducted on quiet residential roads, provides children with real-world cycling experience.  The goal is to equip children with good road safety knowledge and understanding.

Level Three & Transition. This is the advanced stage for Y6-Y11 students who’ve completed Level Two. It tackles complex road situations like roundabouts, traffic lights, and multi-lanes. High Schools can access funding for Level Three; ask your PE teacher for details

For more information please see the Bikeability Trust’s website.

Learn to Ride Private Sessions.

During the spring and summer months, we offer 90-minute sessions for children aged 4-11. They start with balancing, then move to pedalling. It’s great for beginners or those moving on from stabilisers. Children should bring a bike and helmet, but we may have some available if needed. Check our website and social media for session updates as they fill up fast!

I manage and deliver an annual calendar of school sport competitions and the bikeability programme across all our schools. I take immense satisfaction in positively impacting children’s lives and nurturing their passion for sports, drawing from my own experiences as a former international athlete. When I’m not working, I love baking and outdoor adventures, especially those that involve a picnic!
